Clara Barton provided relief services on battlefields during the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War in Europe, working with bereaved families to identify lost soldiers, nursing the wounded, and aiding the displaced. For most of her life she kept a diary, conducted a voluminous correspondence, and was active in numerous progressive causes. Despite her accomplishments, she expressed frustration with the barriers that confronted her as a woman, and her diaries reveal a lifelong struggle with depression

STUFF EVERY MOM SHOULD KNOW

HOW TO BUILD A KICKASS BLANKET FORT

SHORT ON SPACE, TIME, OR $$ FOR A TREE HOUSE?

THEN A BLANKET FORT IS FOR YOU!

  • A SNAP TO SET UP WITH MATERIALS AT HAND, EVEN IN A HOTEL ROOM.
  • A QUIET NOOK AND SOURCE OF NEEDED PRIVACY DURING EXTENDED VISITS WITH GRANDPARENTS AND COUSINS.
  • ENGAGES IMAGINATION AND S.T.E.M. SKILLS.
  • CHASES AWAY AN AFTERNOON OF THE DOLEDRUMS AND IS A TERRIFIC WAY TO PASS A SICKDAY.

MATERIALS

  • SOFT THINGS:

SHEETS, BLANKETS, TOWELS, PILLOWS,

CUSHIONS, PLUSHIES

  • CONNECTORS:

BINDER CLIPS, CLOTHES PINS, SAFETY PINS,

RUBBER BANDS, PAINTER'S TAPE, STRING,

ROPE

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

  1. SURVEY THE LANDSCAPE - CHOOSE AN AREA AWAY FROM FAMILY TRAFFIC, BUT NEXT TO STURDY FURNITURE. LIKE BEHIND THE SOFA.
  2. BEGIN WITH THE FOUNDATION - CHAIRS, BROOM & MOP, CHAIRS, ETC. DRAPE & LAYER BLANKETS & SHEETS OVER. A QUILT OR TWO MAKES A COMFY FLOOR.
  3. USE CONNECTORS TO JOIN SHEETS & BLANKETS AND TO KEEP THEM FROM FALLING OFF THE FOUNDATION PIECES.
  4. CREATE A DOOR BY LEAVING AN OPENING AT THE SIDE. PROP UP A BLANKET WITH PILLOWS TO CREATE AN ENTRANCE TUNNLE.
  5. STOCK THE FORT WITH BOOKS, PUZZLES, FLASHLIGHTS, CARS, STUFFED ANIMALS, ETC.
  6. STEP BACK AND ENJOY YOUR AWESOME CREATION!
